The Story Behind Song Lyrics — “Grand Design”
The life-affirming story of the original song
I keep playing gigs and hearing feedback from people that, “I love your music, I just wish I could hear the words!”
So, below in bold are the lyrics to my song, “Grand Design”, which you can hear by clicking on the title, or by clicking right here.
The “behind the music” story of this song
I originally wrote the guitar part back in 2003, and I wrote it as a breakup song called, “Just The Best For You”. I wrote it for a girl I almost lost my virginity to and I was trying to be the bigger man.
I got over it — both her, and my need to spiritually bypass myself — and those lyrics became less meaningful.
The song needed new words for the person I’d become by 2015, and I wanted them to speak of transcendent truths with the power to remind me where my “center” is for the rest of my life, regardless of the woman I was with, the job I had, or the place I lived.
And I wanted to share that freedom with others, to help others re-encounter their center too, despite any storm.
At the time, I was learning spiritual principles at Center for Spiritual Living Seattle, and it occurred to me one day that everything — all the experiences of our lives — comes down to intention and attention, that what we yearn for and what we put our attention on create the results of our lived experiences.
And these words came together.
May they inspire you greater self-knowing, and greater comfort in that self-knowledge.
